A Love Letter to the Shanti Kula

“We are not called to go where it is easy and love already exists.
We are called to go where we are sent and bring love with us.”

Dharma callings are fluid, so much so that they rearrange us from the inside out, once we understand the call and surrender to it.  My Dharma was forever rearranged when I heard about the plight of a captive Sri Lankan “Temple Elephant” named Ganga.  These highly sentient beings are, at the very least, tightly and forever chained on cruel display year after year, as endless streams of people, in the name of compassion, filter past them to pray in ashrams and temples.

As I learned more about her immense, constant, and needless suffering (and of so many others like her), I found myself imploring “Why doesn’t somebody do something?” Then I heard and understood the call---I AM that ‘somebody’--and Heart of Ganesh was born.

Our Dharma resides at the “Intersection of The Gift and The Times”, and Heart of Ganesh is that intersection for me.  Creating this nonprofit organization is my response to that which I can no longer turn away.  In addition to bringing international awareness to the abuse of “Temple Elephants”, Heart of Ganesh is dedicated to awakening the Sacred Activist within us all, through music, movement, and meditation. Dharma Rhythms-inspired workshops and retreats will bring awareness, action, and compassion to the mission of cultivating and supporting the happiness and freedom of all beings—humans and animals alike.

As such, April 1st finds me stepping aside as the owner of the Shanti. Carrying the Shanti vision forward is longtime friend and yogini Susan Holcroft, who has studied, practiced, and played beside you at the Shanti from the very day we opened our doors. Her experience is rich, her heart vast, her compassion boundless; the seeds we’ve sown together will come into full bloom under the warmth of Susan’s love.

This summer I will still be teaching my regular Monday and Wednesday classes, a few workshops and a Silent Retreat.  November and December will find me in Sri Lanka, northern Thailand, and Laos, returning to the Shanti in January to share what there is to share, and to practice beside you once again. And it is because of practicing with you for over a decade that I have the courage (inspired by your courage) to go where love is lacking, bringing your powerful Shanti Love with me, for the benefit of all beings everywhere.

With deep pranams,
OM Shanti OM Shanti Om Shantihi
